Just a quick disclaimer:
None of this actually happened so… also I put it in Erin Hunter’s Warrior Cat world not the SSO one, and I have not read much of the latest books so some of this might not match up. Plus, I used some of the same characters from Erin’s books but changed it up a bit.
(It doesn't have a name yet... sooo)
Chapter One:
Umm… Now I’m running. From them. From Thunderclan. I don’t have a clue why but I just am. Strange memories coursed through my jumbled brain. Blood and death, scared faces and angry ones. Was there a battle?
“Mosskit-come back!” A yowl sounded from close behind. Too close. They’re gaining on me. One false move and I’m a goner. I don’t know what I did but if I’m running in a storm like this it must have been really, really bad.
“Spread out… we’ll cut him off at the…” Orders from a familiar stern voice became muffled as the sound of running paws faded in the background. I was tired. My paws ached and so did my head. I wanted to stop and slow down but I couldn’t.
My mud-covered paws thudded against the forest turf, my black pads already bleeding from random sharp rocks and twigs. The river is just ahead… if I could just—
“Mosskit!” A pitch black tomcat leapt in front of me, batting me sideways with one quick move of his paw. “You aren’t supposed to be out of camp! Especially after what happened!” Crowfur’s blue eyes were worried despite his harsh tone. He leaned down to pick me up but I lashed at him with my thorn sharp claws. He recoiled in shock.
“I-I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to!” I cried, but couldn’t hear my own voice. Immediately I realized I couldn’t even control my own body. What sort of sick joke was this? Was Starclan playing with me like a puppet?
I felt myself leap up and onto Crowfur’s back, latching on with my claws. The Warrior tried to reached back and pluck me off, not wanting to hurt me. Dad…
I leapt off him and sprinted to the river with amazing speed. I’m at the edge, staring into the fast flowing water. The patrol skidded to a halt behind me, Crowfur at the head. They were all panting tiredly and soaking wet from the rain.
I tried to stop myself but I jumped head-first into the current.
I opened my honey yellow eyes.
“It was just a dream.” I sighed with utter relief, rolling onto my back. I was so tired of these awful dreams. I needed answers, or just some sort of sign from Starclan if they actually still cared about me. I prayed silently for just that.
Mud. Leaf. Sky. Light. Ash. Moss.
I blinked a few times, wondering where those words came from. I stared up at the roof of the Nursery, spotting each object. Sunlight flooded into the mud covered den, and I could see patches of sky through the twigs and leaves. I shifted in my mossy nest, and sat up.
Wolf. Thorn. Twig. Honey. Mouse. Nettle.
My heart pounded more noticeably. I had never heard those words before. Where could they have come from? I padded outside, frowning. A white and hazy grey kit padded out after me.
“Mosskit! Good morning!” Mapleshade, a tortoiseshell Queen with a bit more orange in her pelt than me, bounded over. She brushed her muzzle against mine and licked my ears gently.
“Hey mom.” I broke away from the embrace, deep in thought.
“You okay?” I didn’t have time to respond because that little kit who followed me tackled me.
Naturally, I would roll over and crush her, but, as it so happens, Skykit is Firestar’s kitten. Besides… I was used to her pouncing on me at random.
I shook her off easily, being bigger than her and all had its advantages. Skykit rolled away and hopped into a playful stance. “Oh please, please, please, please! Won’t you play with me? It could be fun!” She begged, her sky blue eyes shining with excitement.
Mapleshade smiled. “You two go have fun!” She purred and trotted away over to the Fresh Kill pile. She pressed up against Crowfur, a pitch black tomcat with honey yellow eyes.
As soon as she had left I whipped around and glared at Skykit. “Play? I don’t play. Cool cats like me don’t play. We fight and hunt and don’t hang around little kits like you.” He huffed.
Skykit stood up and shuffled her paws. “Oh… right! I can be a Warrior too. I don’t know what I was talking about. Playing? Ha!” She scoffed, though seemed really uncomfortable.
I rolled my eyes and padded away. She is so annoying! I can’t stand to have such a silly kit as a Clanmate. The only kit I want to hang around is Ashkit. He’s cool. Much like myself-and much not like Skykit.
“Hey! Hey Ashkit!” I bounded over to the blue/gray tomcat who was lounging outside of the Elder’s den.
“Oh… you.” Ashkit sniffed disdainfully in my direction and whisked away into the the den. He started chatting with a few of the Elders and my tail drooped.
“How am I supposed to get the coolest cat in the clan to be my friend?” I asked myself aloud, which was a mistake. One of the Elders had not been inside the den, but watching me from a distance. Now, he padded over to me.
“Young Mosskit, ask yourself this question. Does Starclan want another Ashkit, or does Starclan want you to be Mosskit.” Triggerclaw meowed with his old husky rumble. He flicked his tail over my ears and padded into the Elder’s den.
What does he mean by that? Of course I’m Mosskit! I glanced over at Skykit, who was still sitting outside of the Nursery. She was drawing angry faces in the ground with her claws. I sighed. Maybe I was acting a bit too much like Ashkit. I shrugged it off and padded over to join her.
“Hey.” I meowed.
“Hey.”
“What are you drawing?”
“Nothing. Warriors don’t draw. Warriors don’t play. I’m sketching a battle plan.”
I sat beside her and looked down at the picture. Two cats with angry faces were fighting. They appeared to have very pointy ears, sharp claws, and thin tails.
I hadn’t realized how close I was sitting next to her. Our fur was brushing and she had stopped drawing, her face red. I inched away slightly and she sighed.
“You think I’m weird, don’t you?” She asked suddenly, scoring sharp tick marks into the ground, making it look like it was raining during the battle.
“No… I mean… Yeah, I do.” I shrugged, and she sniffled. My ears perked at the sound. “Well, I think every cat is weird in their own way.”
Skykit giggled. “Yeah, especially you!”
“Hey!” I cuffed her over the ear playfully, and she ducked her head, grinning.
There was an awkward pause when she just started staring at me, but luckily it was quickly interrupted by a yowl from the High Ledge.
“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather below the High Ledge for a Clan Meeting!” Firestar called, and the clan began to gather.
“Let’s go, I can hunt.” I scrambled towards the Ledge with Skykit following close behind. And I almost made it too.
“Mosskit, you know you aren’t old enough to watch.” Mapleshade pointed out gently and picked him up by the scruff. I grumbled as she carried me away and wondered why she didn’t get Skykit as well.
She set me down in the Nursery and padded back out to watch the meeting herself. I leaned out and watched her leave. I spotted Skykit trotting over to me.
“Hi.”
“What do you think your doing? Did some cat tell you to come here?” I asked quickly.
“Um… no.” Skykit tilted her head.
“Then go and watch the meeting! I can hardly hear a thing from here.”
She reached up and clicked his forehead, giggling. “Your as deaf as the elders! I can hear fine. But I’ll go over and tell you if anything interesting is going on.” Skykit reddened in the face and skipped away to the crowd of cats below the High Ledge. She stayed near the back so she would be less noticed by the others.
I stared after her with a fluttering feeling in my stomach.
“Look at him, I think he’s going to be sick!” Ashkit chuckled from behind, and his minion Twigkit made a strange squeaking sound which was probably him trying to laugh. I whipped around angrily. How could I have thought this mangy cat was cool.
“What do you want, Ashkit?” I growled.
His tail beat against the floor impatiently. “Your blocking the view, so move it.”
Twigkit, a tiny brown tabby, sat next to Ashkit. “Y-yeah. M-move it.”
“Whatever.” I rolled my eyes and stepped outside of the den. I sat with my back against it, staring at the battle Skykit had drawn into the ground. She must have added to it, because now there were many cats who appeared to be fighting in the rain. I counted six cats.
Mud. Leaf. Sky. Light. Ash. Moss.
The same words from earlier. I cringed. Was I going mad? What could it mean?
When the meeting was over, Skykit bounded back to me. "Nothing exciting, just organizing some patrols and changing up the order of things. They are thinking about moving the Elder's den closer to the High Ledge."
"That'd be weird, I'm so used to it near the camp entrance." I shrugged and padded back inside the nursery. I was bored stiff so I decided I would just take a quick nap.
Skykit looked over at me before padding over to curl up beside Sandstorm who had been resting in the Nursery.
I woke up with a chilling feeling. I had dreamed again. The battle in Skykit’s drawing… I was in it. The list of random words bounced around in my head. Then a sudden thought hit me. What if they weren’t random? What if… What if they were names? If I was in the battle… Or I was going to be-I must be on the list.
Moss.
This is bad. I’m going to get in a huge fight with a bunch of cats.
Mud. Leaf. Sky. Light. Ash.
Skykit will be there too. But what about the others? Thunderclan has no kits bearing those names. What about the other clans? But how can I find out if I’m stuck in camp?
“Get up sleepyhead!” Mapleshade nudged me with her muzzle and I sat up. “You might want to go outside.” She purred, though her eyes glistened with imminent tears.
I realized I had overslept. It was morning of the next day. Something important is supposed to happen today, but I can't remember...
I padded outside and was greeted by an excited Skykit. She leapt forward and pinned me, blue eyes wild.
“We’re going to be apprenticed!” She yowled, releasing me and hopping around.
I completely forgot! Our apprentice ceremony is today! This means… I can go to gatherings! Then maybe I’ll find the others!
“Looks like we might be training together.” Ashkit stepped outside with a disgusted look on his face. “Oh joy.”
I made a face at him and looked around the camp to find my brother and sister. I was the only kit in my litter but my mother had five kits before she met Crowfur. I had only met two of them because the others are in other clans or aren’t in any… I never knew their father, and they hardly talked about him-especially around Crowfur. So, technically their my half-siblings.
“Mosskit! There you are!” Rosepetal, my half-sister, padded over to me. Her dark ginger fur was freshly groomed and her unique red eyes sparkled with excitement. “Are you ready to become an apprentice?”
I nodded.
My half-brother appeared beside Rosepetal and licked her cheek affectionately. “Looks like our little brother is growing up!” Sparrowfoot smiled at me.
I purred and rubbed against his sleek coat. His fur was white with flecks of brown throughout it, and he had a very distinct blotch of brown on his head that covered his ears and the top of his muzzle.
Skykit joined us, her fur half groomed. She must have slipped away from Sandstorm while the she-cat had been trying to clean her up.
“Will Honeykit be becoming an apprentice today, too?” I queried, and Skykit frowned at me.
“Of course she will!”
Sparrowfoot and Rosepetal exchanged a glance and padded away. “We’ll see you at the ceremony, Mosskit!” They called over their shoulders.
Skykit shuffled her paws. “I don’t understand why everyone keeps doing that whenever the topic pops up. Why wouldn’t Honeykit be apprenticed?”
I stared at her awkwardly. “Well… haven’t you noticed there’s something different about her? She doesn’t look at anyone directly and she usually keeps to herself.”
The white kit bristled. “Of course she’s different! We’re all different! She deserves to be an apprentice just as much as we do!”
“Look, I didn’t say that she didn’t… it’s just-“
Skykit whipped around and stalked away. Honeykit had been sitting by the nursery, but when her sister passed by, her nose wiggled and her head shot up. She padded after her, her sandy coat glinting in the sunlight.
“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the High Ledge for a Clan Meeting.” Firestar called, and I trotted over to the crowd of cats gathering below the ledge. I sat in the front row with the other kits who would be becoming apprentices. Skykit and her sister sat next to me, despite what happened earlier, and Ashkit with Twigkit sat a little ways away.
Ash.
Twig.
My ears shot up. Twigkit and Ashkit were both on the list! How could I have forgotten? Too late to think of that now, the ceremony is starting!
Firestar stepped up to the edge of the High Ledge, his green eyes gazing down at the clan below. “Skykit, Ashkit, Twigkit and Mosskit.” He paused, and I suddenly realized he completely left out Honeykit, Skykit’s sister. She must have noticed as well because her misty grey eyes were narrowed.
The leader continued, “you have reached the age of six moons and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Skypaw, Ashpaw, Twigpaw and Mosspaw. Skypaw, your mentor will be Cloudtail. I hope he will pass down all he knows on to you. Ashpaw, your mentor will be Fallenfur. I hope she will pass down all she knows on to you.” He paused, and Cloudtail and Fallenfur stepped forward.
“Twigpaw, at Ivywing’s request and your own, you will become a Medicine Cat apprentice. Ivywing will be your mentor. I hope she will pass down all she knows on to you. Mosspaw, your mentor will be Featherclaw. I hope he will pass down all he knows on to you.”
Ivywing and Featherclaw padded up next to the other new mentors. I gazed up at the leader with excitement. Mosspaw! I’m Mosspaw now! Skypaw glanced over at me, her eyes shining.
“Cloudtail, Fallenfur, Ivywing and Featherclaw.” Firestar now looked upon the new mentors. “You are all ready to take on an apprentice. You had received excellent training from your former mentors: Me, Shadefurry, Cinderheart, and Owlclaw, and you have all proven to be brave and loyal warriors.
“Cloudtail, you will be the mentor of Skypaw, and I expect you to pass down all you know on to her.”
Cloudtail padded up to Skypaw and they touched noses. Skypaw seemed super excited to have Cloudtail as her mentor.
“Fallenfur.” The orange tabby leader continued. “You will be the mentor of Ashpaw, and I expect you to pass down all you know on to him.”
Fallenfur leaned down and touched noses with Ashpaw. Even he looked overwhelmed by his new status in the clan.
“Ivywing, you will be the mentor of Twigpaw, and I expect you to pass down all you know on to him.” Firestar meowed, and Ivywing and Twigpaw touched noses as the others had done.
“Featherclaw.” The leader called at last, and I looked around to see my new mentor. He was a tall silvery white tabby with relaxed brown eyes. He spotted me and winked.
“You will be the mentor of Mosspaw, and I expect you to pass down all you know on to him.” Firestar finished, and I scurried over to my new mentor. He reached down and touched noses with me. He smiled gently down at me and I backed away to stand next to the other apprentices. My mother, Mapleshade, licked my ears quite sorrowfully. I knew she would miss me being a kit, but I was ready to grow up, just like the others.
“Congratulations new apprentices! I trust that you will server your clan well! Clan dismissed!” Firestar leapt down from the High Ledge and padded over to Sandstorm, who was looking rather nauseous.
I stood up and turned to talk to Skypaw, but the white she-cat was heading over to her father. Honeykit was nowhere to be seen.
I know I’m not supposed to do this, but I followed her and hid behind one of the den walls. I peeked out and watched, my ears straining to hear their conversation.
“-but dad! It’s not fair!” Skypaw cried.
“Honeykit can’t become a warrior if she cannot see. It’s just not possible.” Firestar meowed sternly. It was apparent that they had had this argument many times before.
“She can become a Medicine Cat…” Sandstorm suggested gently.
“No! She want’s to be a Warrior!” Skypaw snapped angrily.
“Listen-“ Firestar stopped suddenly. Honeykit had padded over to them, her grey eyes staring at the ground like usual but her ears were pinned. She had been listening in on the conversation as well.
“Honeykit…” Sandstorm approached her, but the she-cat recoiled.
“I know you think I’m worthless-but I’ll show you! I can be a Warrior!” Honeykit hissed. She turned and sprinted away towards the camp exit. Her clanmates dodged to get out of her way, curious at her behavior. Her parents stared after her.
Skypaw snarled at them and prowled away. I quickly padded after her.
“I agree with you.” I mewed quickly. “Honeykit can learn to fight blind.”
“Thanks, Mosspaw.” She sighed. “But it’s not like we can change their minds. We’ll… we’ll just have to find someone who will help.”
We padded over to the camp entrance in silence. Honeykit was sitting right outside camp, staring into the forest. The guard posted there watched her curiously. Skypaw sat on her sisters right side and I her left.
“Don’t listen to them.” Skypaw whispered. “We will find someone who will teach you and then you can become an apprentice. Until then, I refuse to train without you.”
