-History-
Cloud was born in a large twoleg city (Jarlaheim) to an exhausted, beat-up tortoiseshell she-cat with long ragged fur and piercing blue eyes. It was raining heavily and her father had gone out to salvage some food. Herring, her mother, crouched low over her newborn kit, hidden from twolegs under an old wagon in an ally. Cloud was born with her eyes open, and pressed up against her mother in fear as a few twoleg paws were spotted walking past the cart.
“It’s okay…” Herring murmured to her kit, her tail curled around them. Suddenly, a spotted tomcat appeared before them, soaking wet. He ducked under the cart and Cloud backed away in fear.“She’s so little…” Crush whispered, his deep brown gaze examining his new daughter. “She won’t make it through Leaf-bare.” He decided, setting a scrawny rat in front of his mate.
“Oh-cheer up.” Herring grumbled. “She has a chance.” She scooted Cloud further back to make more room for Crush, and Cloud found herself on a pile of muck pressed up against the cold stone of the giant wall surrounding the city.
“Just another mouth to feed.” Crush retorted after crawling deeper under the wagon.
“I can help hunt.” Herring meowed quickly.
“Another cat to protect.” He hissed. “It’s too much in a place like this.”
“We can leave…” Herring whispered, glancing back at the tiny kit behind them. The rain almost drowned out Crush’s next words.
“Leave? You know we can’t leave! I told you about those wild cats… they don’t like visitors.” He growled.
Herring rested her head on her paws, her blue eyes sorrowful. “The clans.” She muttered, and Crush nodded vigorously.
“So it’s settled them.” He huffed. “This is no place for a tiny she-cat. She goes tomorrow.” The big, matted tomcat turned over and curled up to sleep, and Herring was left staring out into the rain.
…
Luckily, Cloud found her voice the very next day…
“Why can’t I stay with you, mother?” Her quiet mew called desperately to the tired she-cat carrying her.
Herring remained silent as she bounded past twolegs, leapt onto wooden crates and dashed across clothing-lines. They were almost out of the long ally.
Finally, Herring pelted out of the city through the open gate. Cloud tried to take in everything she saw, though it was hard as she bounced around in her mother’s jaws. Finally, they stopped at the edge of a dock.
“Woah.” Cloud stared into rippling water for the first time ever. A red twoleg gate blocked the water.
Herring sat and waited, still holding the tiny kit. Suddenly, a huge yellow monster glided over the water towards them. Cloud screamed in fear but her mother remained still, her blue eyes dull. The monster stopped at the dock and opened its mouth. The red gate shot up and Herring padded onto the monster. She set her kit down gently then stepped off it and back onto the dock.
“Mother?” Cloud turned around and fell on her side clumsily. She picked herself up and tilted her head. She started forward to Herring, but the she-cat shook her head.
“Wait there, Cloud. Stay put.” She meowed softly, and her kit obliged, sitting down.
The monster’s mouth began to rise up, and started to block the view of Herring. “No stop! Mother--help!” Cloud yowled in terror, jumping up to get her last glimpse of the tortoiseshell she-cat. Herring stood up and, with difficulty, turned around and began to pad away slowly. “Wait! Don’t leave me!” The spotted kit cried out in fear but Herring did not seem to hear as Cloud’s view was finally blocked off. The monster shifted and seemed to pull away from the dock.
Cloud swayed unsteadily and fell on her haunches. She was alone on the strange creature and was being steadily stolen from her home. Tears fell down the kits face as she cried out again for her mother. “Mother! I’m right here! Please help me!” She yowled. “Don’t go!”
…
Cloud found herself once more on a dock after being kicked off the monster by an angry twoleg. It was very dark and the moon was obscured with fog.
The tiny brown-dappled kit padded quietly down the dock, as far away from the monster as she could. She was exhausted, mentally and physically, yet managed to walk all the way to a beach covered with twoleg chairs. A few shadowy shapes flitted here and there, hidden and watching the kit. Suddenly, a cat appeared before her.
“Mother?” Cloud whispered hoarsely, but when the moonlight broke through and shone onto the feline, she realized it was a stranger.
“Hello, there.” The pure white she-cat meowed kindly. “Who might you be?” Her pupiless white eyes glinted.
The kit blinked tiredly. “Cloud…” Then everything when dark…
…
3 Moons after living on the beach… protected by the white she-cat…
“Gotcha!” Cloud purred, sitting atop her guardian. Doveheart laughed, and batted the spotted kit off with her starry paws. Clouded rolled out of the makeshift bramble den and onto the sand, the warm sun shining down on her.
“You silly goose.” Doveheart giggled as she padded out after the cat, giving off a strange peaceful aura. Cloud jumped up onto her paws.
“Please please please please please please…” She began closing her eyes with hopefulness. “PLEASE can we go to the cliff today!” She begged, flopping at Doveheart’s paws.
The white-she cat purred gently. “I know how much you want to go, Cloud, and you will-someday. You aren’t ready yet. Just 3 more moons and I’ll take you there myself.”
3 more moons. Cloud told herself excitedly. I can go to the cliff when I’m 6 moons!
…
Cloud padded alongside Doveheart as they made their way towards the tall grassy cliff. It was very late, and the full moon cast eerie shadows over them. “Why didn’t we go in the day time?” She whispered, quickening her speed.
Doveheart grinned. “Because this is when the gathering starts.” She explained. “All the clans in the land gather here every night-isn’t that amazing?”
Cloud imagined a large amount of wild cats, like the ones Dove had told her about before, mingling and chatting below the cliff. “I can’t wait!”
Doveheart stopped right outside of the clearing, pressed up against the cliff. “Okay, Cloud, go on to the gathering and be very quiet. Remember, you aren’t allowed to speak to anyone.”
“Why not?” She huffed, and Doveheart rested her glowing tail on the apprentice’s back.
“Because you are supposed to be watching, and it is very important that you pay attention to this gathering.” Dove explained. “But you may speak at your next one.”
Cloud’s eyes widened. “Really? You’ll let me go again?” Doveheart nodded and so the young she-cat skipped excitedly out into the clearing, finding a spot to sit alone. More and more clans began to arrive, and all sat in single file, casting weary glances at the other clans. Nobody approached each other.
Cloud tried to get Doveheart’s eye contact and send her a silent question, but the starry she-cat had vanished. The she-cat shifted uncomfortably, but fell silent as a big cat atop the cliff began to speak.
“Welcome, cats of all clans!” The black she-cat spoke warmly… and the gathering began.
…
“Why didn’t the clans speak to each other in the clearing? Everyone looked so nervous.” Cloud queered, back at the beach with Doveheart. They were in a palm tree, chatting.
“There have been many wars in this land.” Doveheart sighed. “And unfortunately, it has affected each clan. At least the gatherings are still going on…”
“I wish we were in a clan.” Cloud frowned. “Then we could have a territory and hunt!”
Doveheart smiled softly. “I am already in a clan, my sweet Cloud. And you will soon be as well.”
“What clan?”
“I am apart of a big clan in Silverpelt, Cloudpaw. Starclan. Someday when your time comes you will join Starclan too. You just have to promise me you will always believe.” The starry she-cat explained.
“Believe what?”
“You silly goose!” She purred. “Believe in Starclan, of course!”
Cloud looked up at the sky, though it was broad daylight and Silverpelt was not out yet. “I promise!”
…
“Cloud, over here!” Doveheart lead the she-cat through the fields. “Look!” They stopped and Doveheart pointed to a huge natural tunnel that stuck out at the end of the glades.
“Woaaah!” Cloud’s eyes widened. Doveheart led the spotted feline into the tunnel, and then stopped at a cluster of bushes.
“Look…” She whispered, eyes full of stars. Cloud peered through the shrubbery and saw that another side tunnel let out to a gorgeous clearing, with a single tree and a stone beach. The grass was a very dark green and there were a lot of fireflies that lit up the night air.
Cloud bounded down the slope and flopped onto the grass, rolling around and around. “It’s so magical!” She exclaimed, sighing contently.
Doveheart watched her sadly and padded over to her. “Cloud, there is something I need to tell you.”
“Sure.” Cloud followed the starry she-cat over to the stone beach.
“I need to go.” She burst out. “I need to return to Starclan now. You are 14 moons old and I have trained you all I know. You are ready to be on your own.”
Cloud’s eyes widened. “What? I don’t want to be on my own! I want to stay with you!” She sounded childish but did not care.
“Please understand, Cloud.” Doveheart tried to smile encouragingly. “I am not alive anymore. I died a long time ago and rose up to Starclan. And I was able to come back temporarily to help you… but now I must return. Don’t worry, I’ll always be in here when you need me.” She added in a hoarse whisper, placing a starry paw over Cloud’s heart.
Cloud’s eyes welled up in tears. “I understand.” Doveheart purred but it caught in her throat so she rested her chin atop Cloud’s head and the spotted she-cat licked Doveheart’s shoulder with respect. Then the she vanished, leaving Cloud alone in the clearing.
…
“Come on, Cloudtuft!” Honeydew called over her shoulder as she bolted a few tail lengths ahead.
Cloudtuft was sprinting after her. She used her strong legs to push off the ground and leapt into the air. She landed atop her friend and they both went tumbling down the hill, laughing. “Gotcha.” She heaved in between giggles.
“Fine. But you have to admit, I’m pretty fast.” Honeydew grinned and stood up, shaking out her pelt.
Cloudtuft stood as well. “I love this forest.” She sighed, looking around at the dark green grass and tall fir trees. “It’s so peaceful.” Honeydew agreed. “I remember our clan found you in that secret clearing. I’m so happy you joined, at first I thought you were going to kill me.”
Cloudtuft grinned. “I was, but then I realized you were just like me. How long were you a rogue?”
Honeydew thought for a moment. “I joined Dawnclan when I was 10 moons old. So I was a rogue for that long.”
“I beat you by 4 moons.” Cloudtuft’s brown eyes closed briefly. “Gee that was ages ago.”
“You said it.” Honeydew sighed. “What, I’ve been in Dawnclan for like, 30 moons now?”
“That would make it 26 moons for me.” Cloudtuft realized. She was 40 moons old already!
“Do you ever miss being a rogue?” Honeydew asked eventually as they both padded up a few slopes to camp.
“Nah,” Cloudtuft shrugged, but remembered Doveheart. “Well, I only miss this she-cat who raised me.”
“I was brought up by my father.” Honeydew explained. “But who was this she-cat?”
“Her name was Doveheart.” The spotted she-cat told her for the first time.
“Sounds like a clan cat to me.” Her friend commented as they neared camp.
“Well, she is-or well, was.” Cloudtuft mumbled.
“Oh. I’m sorry, she died?” Honeydew asked awkwardly.
Cloudtuft nodded. “Yes, but I never knew her when she was alive. She told me she died a long time ago.”
Honeydew was looking at her strangely. “What do you mean, you never knew her when she was alive.”
“She was from Starclan.”
…
“Please… don’t leave…” Honeydew followed Cloudtuft as she stormed out of camp.
“I’ve had it with this clan.” She snarled, a little too harshly. “They all eat like pigs and care nothing of the outside world. Don’t they ever want to reach the other clans? Don’t they want the strength of allies and the thrill of triumph in war? I am out.”
“I thought we were best friends, forever.” Honeydew breathed, remembering the vow they had made when they were young warriors.
That seemed like ages ago but 63-moon-old Cloudtuft turned around to face her friend. “I’m sorry. I just can’t stay here any longer.”
“Then I’ll go with you!” Honeydew exclaimed in a high pitched voice.
Cloudtuft’s heart soared… then the momentary joy swept out of her. “Honeydew…” She choked. “You have a mate and kits. You can’t leave them, and rogue life is no place for your family. I can visit…” She trailed off.
“Cloudtuft,” Honeydew ran to her and broke down in tears. “I’ll miss you!”
“Miss you too…” They both touched noses to part ways.
Then Cloudtuft turned, misty-eyed, away from her clan and best friend, never to return again.
…
“Wow you had a weird life.” Frostkit stared at her mother as the she-cat finished her story.
Cloud laughed. “Thank you, Frostkit. That means a lot to me.”
Winterkit shoved her black-furred sister out of the way with difficulty. “Don’t be rude!”
“It’s alright.” Cloud grinned, but the runt of the litter, Rainkit, pushed past Winterkit.
“Yeah, don’t be wude.” She mimicked in her tiny voice.
“What’s going on here, eh?” Gooseberry, a bluegrey tomcat, padded into the den with a large rabbit. He dropped it in front of his mate.
“Oh, just telling them my life story.” Cloud sighed like it was nothing, and began to eat the rabbit.
“Aw, you never told me!” Gooseberry mocked a pouting face.
“Well, I guess you never asked.” Cloud huffed playfully.
…
Cloud led her kits away from the clearing, wanting to get away from Gooseberry’s dead body as fast as she could. I thought he loved me…
They arrived at a lake first, then traveled down to a high river with a fast current. They took a break to drink.
“I love water!” Winterkit sighed.
“I don’t like getting wet.” Frostkit huffed as the river splashed water onto her.
“I like rain.” Rainkit danced around in a circle, then stared into the water. She thought she saw something flicker in it. “Minnow!” She mewed happily, and jumped into to catch it. The current swiftly swept her under the surface.
Cloud suddenly froze after realizing what her kit had just done. “Rainkit!” She yowled and leapt into the water after her. What on earth possessed her to jump into the river??? She thought worriedly as she thrashed in the choppy water. Rainkit’s head broke the surface a tail length ahead, and she lurched forward and caught her in her jaws. She struggled for a moment, then spotted Frostkit running along the shore, calling to her. She managed to tread water against the current and held out the limp kit towards Frostkit. The big black she-cat leaned forward and snatched up her little sister, and Winterkit helped her pull the furball ashore.
Cloud suddenly realized she could not fight the current any longer, and it began to pull her away from them. She watched her kits slowly disappeared, but Frostkit was bounding along the shore again.
“Mother!” She cried, and the spotted she-cat managed to keep her head above water to cry out to her kit.
“Take care of your sisters!” She yowled, knowing she would be swept away, and she was. The water pulled her below the surface and she tumbled away in the underwater current…
…
Coughing and splutter, Cloud drug herself onto the shore, and collapsed there. In an instant, she knew where she was! She was back at the glades where the tunnel was. My kits! The thought struck her, and she forced herself to stand. I must find them… Cloud bounded away without a moments hesitation, following along the river. It seemed like hours had passed before she managed to find the spot where she had last seen her kits.
“How long was I out…?” She felt hopelessness settle in and she began the slow trek back towards the tunnel to find shelter for the night. As the moon poked out, she was able to tell how long it had been from the size of the moon. “It’s been four days… My kits could be anywhere!” She collapsed at the entrance to the tunnel with exhaustion. “They are better off without me…” She thought to herself quietly. “They have each other.”
…
It had been 5 moons and the she-cat had successfully began to fulfil her plan. She would create her own clan and live in the rolling hills of Firgrove and use the tunnel clearing as camp. Cloud had met many cats along the way and was steadily gaining more. She already had a trusted Medicine cat, Tigerlily, and even a deputy. Now she needed a name… It popped immediately into her mind. Darkclan. She traveled to the moon tree immediately and received her 9 lives. Eventually, a rogue joined the clan by the name of Deer. She became Tigerlily’s Medicine cat apprentice.
A few more moons later, she had a decent sized clan, and even began attending gatherings with them. Life was finally going her way, and she realized with slight delight that she was expecting kits again. Once they were born, she named one Stonekit and the other Dunekit. (I think). Darkclan thrived and even formed alliance with a neighboring clan: Gladeclan. They had trouble with a few trespassers from other clans, but she made sure to chase them off. Things were starting to look up, and when her old deputy disappeared, she anointed her trusted warrior, Darkclaw, to be her new deputy. She served Cloudstar well, and was loyal to the clan.
Time passed and as Cloudstar began to get older, it was more stressful then ever to lead her clan. She was 96 moons old, and even though many leaders of other clans were older than her, she struggled under the weight of her growing clan and had already lost one life due to an unrecognizable disease. With 8 lives left, the she-cat retired, and Darkclaw rose to take leadership as Darkstar.
And that is when Cloudstar disappeared.
