It was a still, quiet morning. Most of the clan was still sleeping, but Fishkit was eager to play. He bounded outside of the nursery, accidentally waking up Ivykit along the way. She followed him outside and they both sat in the camp clearing, watching the sunrise.
"What do you think, Ivystar? Should we scout out some new territory?" Fishkit, now Fishscales, whispered.
"No, but we should definitely go hunting, Fishscales." Ivykit, now Ivystar, replied in a business like mew. They both giggled and trotted out of camp. Their light grey pelts shimmered in the light of the awakening sun as they treaded away from camp, paws now wet with the fresh dew.
"What are you feeling like this fine morning?" Fishscales asked, breathing in the air deeply. They crested a hill and then bounded down the other side.
"Rabbit, of course." Ivystar replied, her small ears swirling about her head as she tried to catch any sound of prey.
"I'm feeling like a nice juicy hawk." Fishy commented as they stopped in the shade of a tree.
Ivystar frowned. "What's a hawk?"
"All I know is that it's a bird. I heard a few of the warriors talking about it yesterday." Fishy nodded.
"A few of our warriors." Ivystar grinned. "In our clan."
"That's right. I scent them on a patrol because they wouldn't stop jabbering about birds." Fishscales mewed quickly. "But now that we know that a Hawk is a bird, let's try to find one. I also heard them saying how big it was."
Ivystar nodded. "Good. Then all we need to do is look for a giant bird."
They both started padding around in circles like crazy kitties, staring up at the sky and looking for big birds. It seemed like hours before Ivystar called out excitedly,
"There! Fishk-Fishscales look!" She squealed, almost forgetting that they were playing Clan.
"Ivystar you found one!" Fishscales bounded over to her joyfully and they both crouched beside the tree as the bird landed nearby. It was very big indeed. Huge even. And it had a monstrous beak and sharp black claws. It's beady black eyes soon found them, and it let out a loud cry.
Fishscales gulped. "Now what?"
Ivystar's eyes widened. "What do you mean? I don't know anything about Hawks!"
"Well, me either!"
"You catch it!"
"Are you crazy?"
"No!"
"Then you catch it!"
"Are you crazy?"
"Yes!"
"Then we'll both catch it!"
With battle cries (which sounded more like tiny screams) they launched after it. The bird had plenty of time to move out of the way, but it was very intrigued by something it was trying to dig out of the ground. They both landed atop the giant bird and it cawed loudly. It flapped it's wings heavily and threw itself into the sky.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"--------------------------------------
Ivystar choked on a bug while Fishscales tried to stop himself from barfing as the Hawk swirled in the sky. They barely managed to hold on but their kitten sharp claws helped with that.
"There's camp!" Ivystar gasped.
"Let's land this thing!" Fishscales cried, and dug his claws into certain joints on the Hawk. The bird let out a cry of alarm as Fishy gained control of the flight.
"Hurry! Down there!" Ivystar pointed with her tail at the camp clearing. A few warriors, and even some apprentices, had gathered below them, mouths ajar.
"AUGHHH!" Fishscales managed to force the Hawk to take a nose dive towards the camp. The cats below scattered and Ivystar helped Fishscales and they both were able to pull up just in time for a crash landing.
The Hawk did not survive the ordeal, and Ivystar, now Ivykit, and Fishscales, now Fishkit, tumbled off the bird.
"Ivykit! Fishkit!" Skyfall, Fishkit's adoptive mother, rushed forward to the two shivering kits. "You poor things..."
The two kits were lead into the Medicine Cat's den and were given pieces of the Hawk to eat as the Med Cat rubbed a few things on them to help ease their tenseness. They both turned and grinned at each other.
"Well done, Fishscales."
"Couldn't have done it without you, Ivystar."
